Anxious? Try Sedation Dentistry at Oakville’s Oak Park Dental

Anxiety and fear of dental treatment is not uncommon. In fact, there’s a name for it: dentophobia. At OakPark Dental in Oakville, we offer sedation dentistry for those who experience serious anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist. Fear and anxiety should not impede you from receiving professional dental care.

We prioritize patient comfort at our clinic, and can offer you custom sedation or anaesthesia solutions to help alleviate dental anxiety. Depending on the procedure, we may recommend you be treated with minimal, moderate, or maximum sedation. Please book a consultation with us at our Oakville clinic if you are interested in undergoing this form of treatment.

Types of Sedation

Oral Sedatives

For minimal sedation, patients may take an oral sedative or nitrous oxide. An oral sedative is a pill that will desensitize pain and may make you feel drowsy and relaxed.

Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)

Nitrous Oxide, or “laughing gas,” is the oldest and most researched anaesthetic gas, having had a 150-year history. Patients inhale nitrous oxide through a face mask and may experience feelings of calm, relaxation, and numbness to pain.

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is administered through a needled directly into your bloodstream. Patients fall into a semi-conscious state that allows them to communicate discomfort and answer questions, but they may not remember the procedure after the anaesthesia wears off.

General Anaesthesia

General anaesthesia puts a person to sleep and is reserved for more extensive procedures like wisdom tooth surgery. General anaesthesia has a long history in dentistry, but does come with risks, so make sure you discuss with your dentist the risks and benefits, and give them a detailed medical history of your health.

Dental anxiety is not uncommon and is nothing to be ashamed of, no matter your age! Your fear and anxiety should not get in the way of your receiving proper dental care, so contact us today at Oak Park Dental in Oakville to discuss sedation options for you.
