Prioritizing Patient Comfort During Tooth Extractions in Oakville
No one enjoys tooth extractions. At Oak Park Dental, we recognize and understand the stress and discomfort patients face when undergoing a tooth extraction at our Oakville clinic. In the case of wisdom teeth or teeth with poor prognoses, teeth will have to be extracted on occasion. Therefore, we strive to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
If you are anxious about undergoing a tooth extraction at our Oakville clinic, you are not alone! Our well-trained team of dentists can handle most surgical needs with compassion, but for those who are exceptionally nervous we can offer nitrous oxide or other sedatives to relieve the stress. Ultimately, we strive to ensure that you are provided with enough information prior to your appointment, so you understand exactly what is going to happen during your procedure.

How Extractions Work
First, you will be placed under local or general anaesthesia. This will numb the pain of the procedure and may put you in a reduced state of consciousness. There are different anaesthesia methods we can use, and your dentist will discuss with you what seems best in our professional opinion for your situation.
The tooth will then be surgically extracted, and stitches may be applied to stop the wound from bleeding if it’s a more extensive procedure. You might also need to bite down on a cotton pad to help stop the bleeding.
After the procedure, you may be given prescription pain medication or be instructed to take over-the-counter pain medications. Remember to change your gauze pads regularly and, after the first 24 hours, rinse your mouth out with salt water several times a day. This will diminish the swelling and pain.
We ask our patients to expect at least several days of recovery time. During this period, eat soft foods such as mashed potatoes, ice cream, and soup. Avoid strenuous physical activity that increases your heart rate, as this may induce bleeding.

As will all surgical and medical procedures, extractions come with a risk. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to discuss with your dentist. We strive to keep our patients as informed as possible so they know what to expect and to take care of their teeth appropriately post-surgery.
